Sounio is a rocky cape, the southernmost point of Attica. At a distance of 68 km from Athens, Sounion had a strategic location for the city state of Athens. It is located at a site where those who leave by boat pass for the last time, or the spot where one first encounters when approaching Athens. According to mythology, Theseus, the son of Aegeas began his journey from Crete to Crete to kill Minotaur beast. On leaving, he put black sails on his ship, promising to change them to white if he returned alive. Turning on his excitement, however, he forgot to put on the white sails. His father, seeing the black sails thought that his son had died and killed himself by jumping of the cliff. Since then, the sea has been named the Aegean Sea.
